The Bible often talks about baptism as an important part of telling others that we have chosen to follow Jesus. Jesus set the example for us.
In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And when he came up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”
Mark 1:9-11
Right before Jesus was taken back up to Heaven, He told His diciples,
All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.
Matthew 28:16-20
Jesus' final command on earth was for us to be baptized, or washed, in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and then to do everything He tells us to do.
